Having spent many years immersed in the fast-paced and demanding world of fashion, I experienced chronic stress on a daily basis. The long hours in the studio, the pressure to create new designs, and the demands of being an entrepreneur left me with little time to attend to my own emotional and physical well-being. Despite moments of joy and happiness, through out my career, the high of accomplishment would quickly fade, and I was left feeling drained and frustrated.
The chronic stress manifested physically in the form of hormonal imbalances, leaving me feeling out of touch with myself. Having experienced the effects of my thoughts and emotions on my physical state, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, wellness, and mindfulness. Through this exploration, I learned the importance of “ mind-body connection.” When we are in tune with our bodies and aware of our mental and emotional experiences, we can better respond to them. Self-awareness is needed for strengthening this connection and experiences a greater sense of inner peace. Nourish and strengthen mind and body connection with some simple holistic tips:
Stay connected to mother nature, practice mindfulness
Research suggests that contact with nature can be beneficial, for example leading to improvements in mood, cognition, and health.
By focusing on the sights, sounds, and sensations of the natural world, we can quiet our mind and reduce stress. Engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking, gardening, or even simply sitting in a park and observing the environment can help us become more mindful.
“The body and mind are not separate. What affects one, affects the other.” - Deepak Chopra
Foster deep and authentic connections with those around us
Having a supportive network of people to turn to can help to alleviate stress and anxiety. It can also boost our self-esteem and provide a sense of purpose.
Join a social or a health club outside of work
I am an avid believer in investing in a health club membership. The benefits of being a part of a like- minded community when it comes to our physical and mental well-being are great. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who share similar fitness goals and wellness aspirations can provide us with the motivation and support we need to achieve our personal best.
Engage in a physical activity
Regular physical activity can help improve the mind-body connection by increasing the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain, reducing stress, and improving mood. The brain-enhancing effects of exercise, including neuroinflammation, vascularization, antioxidation, energy adaptation, and regulations on neurotrophic factors and neurotransmitters.
Dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NE), and serotonin (5-HT) are the three major monoamine neurotransmitters that are known to be modulated by exercise. Pilates, Yoga and Barre are some of the best forms of low impact exercise that wont cause high cortisol. The stress hormone known to disrupt sleep patterns and trigger compulsive eating habits.
Understanding our body and Paying attention to signs of imbalances
Understanding how our body feels and what it needs, can help us become more attuned to the messages the body is sending us. As women, our monthly cycle can bring about a symphony of hormones that results in different sensations and emotions. By being familiar with your body, you can gain insight into when it’s time to push ourselves and when it’s time to take a step back to avoid physical and mental exhaustion.
Nourish our mental and emotional well-being with a healthy mindset
A healthy mindset involves developing a positive outlook, being self-aware, practicing self-care, and adopting healthy habits. Another important aspect of a healthy mindset is taking care of one’s physical health. This includes getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. It is also important to engage in activities that bring us joy and fulfilment. Attending cultural events, going to art exhibitions. When we engage in these activities, we tap into our imagination.
