Overcoming Tough Times with Howard Napper
“I think it is really important that we give positive information in general. And if we can do that to models that are also role models for so many people, then obviously that is going to be a benefit. Because they have such influence in our lives, whether we realise it or not.”
Having lived in London, Paris, Milan and New York, former fashion model Howard Napper, had an extremely successful career that spanned the 80’s. However, with success, did not come happiness for Howard. He shares how the lack of support for young models and understanding around mental health meant that Howard experienced his own struggles with depression and described how he reached a point of wanting to end his life.
“I had everything that I wanted. I had everything that I set out to get, and yet at the same time all I wanted to do was end it, basically. Because I just didn’t see a way out of the pain.”
Supporting the Be Well Collective today, Howard encourages young models entering the fashion industry to have the understanding that fashion is transient.
“Your favourite jacket one year isn’t your favourite jacket the next year and it's the same as a model. You are not going to be at the top. Even though most iconic models have their faces. You are the flavour of the month one moment and the next moment you are not getting work. “
“What I realise now is that it’s so important, particularly at that age, particularly in your 20s is to have almost a road map forward.. Because it won’t last forever, it’s impossible as fashion doesn’t last forever, it’s evolving all the time.”
